Benny

Privacy

Benny is an audition reader: you add your sides, it prepares the other parts' voices, and during a take it listens for your lines and answers. This page says what it keeps, what it sends where, and why, in plain words.

Your account

To use Benny you create an account with an email address and a password, or continue with Google.

  • Email and password: Supabase, our sign-in service, keeps your email and a hashed form of your password. We never see the password itself.
  • Google: Google tells us your email address, your name and the address of your profile picture, and nothing else. We ask Google for no other access.
  • Emails from Benny are about your account, such as a link to reset your password, or an invitation to read for a friend, which we send only when that friend asks us to. There is no marketing email.

Your scripts

The sides you add (pasted text or a PDF), the part you choose, the settings you change and the reader voice clips made from the other parts' lines are stored for your account alone. No other account can read them unless you share a scene with a friend, and then only that scene's lines (below). We don't read them either, except to fix a problem you report.

Deleting a script removes its text, settings and files at once. Voice clips made for it are erased 30 days after nothing refers to them any more.

During a take

Benny uses your microphone to follow your lines. Your voice is sent, as you speak, to our recognition service (ElevenLabs) to be turned into words, and the words stay in your browser's memory while the take runs. During a take, Benny never records your audio or your video, and it never touches your camera.

What Benny does keep from a take is positions and timings: which line you were on, when a cue fired, how confident the match was. Never the words you said, never audio.

A take is recorded only in a separate research session you agree to in writing first, and never during ordinary use.

Lines you record for the reader

There is one kind of audio Benny keeps from ordinary use: a reader line you choose to record, or a recording of one you upload, for the reader to play in place of its voice. You record while you edit a scene, never during a take.

Your recording is stored for your account alone until you delete it or delete the script. Benny keeps up to three recordings of a line and erases older ones you aren't using.

ElevenLabs turns each recording into words once, with model training off, so that during a take Benny can tell the reader's words from yours. A recording is never used to make a voice, and it is never shared with another account.

Our backups don't hold recordings. If our file storage were ever lost, a recording could not be brought back, and the reader would go back to its voice for that line until you record it again.

Sharing a scene with a friend

You can invite a friend to read one or more reader parts of a scene, by an email Benny sends for you or a link you send yourself. Nothing is shared unless you do it: you choose the scene, the parts and the friend.

Your friend signs in to a free Benny account of their own. They see that scene's lines, the parts' names, the script's title and your name, and they record the parts you chose. They never see your sides' PDF, your notes, your other scenes, your settings, the voices or your email address.

Your friend's recordings play in your takes only once you choose to use them. Stop sharing ends your friend's view of the scene at any time. Deleting the script ends it too, and erases your friend's recordings in it along with yours.

Reading for a friend

If someone invites you to read parts of a scene for them, you sign in to a free Benny account to accept. Accepting is your agreement to the line above Accept, which says where your recordings go.

What we keep: your recordings of the parts you read, in your friend's script; the name your friend sees beside them; the words you agreed to and when; and, if your friend invited you by email, that address, with the invitation. Benny keeps up to five recordings of a line and erases older ones your friend isn't using.

Only you and the person who invited you hear your recordings. They are never used to make a voice and never shared with anyone else. ElevenLabs turns each one into words once, with model training off, and our backups don't hold them. You record one line at a time on a page of your own: Benny never records a take, yours or your friend's.

You can remove your recordings at any time with Remove my recordings: they are erased at once, and those lines go back to the reader's voice. Deleting your account erases them the same way. Leave ends your view of the scene but doesn't remove your recordings.

Who processes your data

Benny runs on a small number of services. Each one sees only what its job needs.

  • Supabase: sign-in, the database and file storage, in the United States.
  • Vercel: hosting the app and running its preparation jobs.
  • ElevenLabs: the reader voices (made from the other parts' lines), live recognition of your voice during a take, checks on the voice clips, and timing the words of a line you record.
  • Google Cloud: a language model reads your script's text to tell parts, lines and beats apart, and reads scanned pages into text.
  • Resend sends our emails: sign-in emails, and invitations to read for a friend. An invitation says who invited you, the parts' names, the script's title, any due date and the link, never a line of the script. Resend keeps the address and the email, with its link, for 30 days, in the United States.
  • Sentry receives error reports, with script text and anything you typed removed first.
  • On every service we use the setting that keeps your content out of model training. We don't promise zero retention: each service keeps data for as long as its own terms say, and we say so rather than guess.

Cookies and your browser

A cookie keeps you signed in. Your browser also remembers display choices such as text size. There are no advertising or analytics cookies.

Your choices

You can delete any script at any time from its settings, and any recording from its line. You can stop sharing a scene, and a friend who reads for you can remove their recordings or leave it, at any time. To delete your account and everything in it, or to ask anything about this page, email us; we answer from a person, not a bot.
